Dean of Assessment: Dr. Marsha Watson
Dr.
Marsha Watson came to GCU from the University of Nebraska at
Omaha, where she was the university Assessment Coordinator, and
an Associate Professor of English. She has also held full-time
faculty positions at Virginia Commonwealth University, University
of Louisville, and Millikin University. Dr. Watson currently
serves the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association
as a PEAQ Consultant Evaluator, AQIP Peer Reviewer, Assessment
Mentor, and Academy of Student Learning Mentor. Dr. Watson
holds a PhD in Literary Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,
as well as an M.A. in English and a B.S. in Mathematics Education
from Northern Illinois University. Her published scholarship
is in the areas of assessment, visual rhetoric, and early American
women writers.
In her role as Dean of Assessment at Grand Canyon University,
Dr Watson’s responsibilities include:
- Overseeing of university-wide assessment and institutional
research
- Chairing of the University Assessment Committee (UAC)
- Recommendation of appropriate benchmarks (in collaboration
with the UAC)
- Leading university efforts to improve student learning and
academic outcomes
- Working with staff, departments, faculty, and colleges to
develop, implement, and improve academic assessment strategies
and the delivery of administrative services supporting the
university’s mission
- Providing leadership on design, implementation, and maintenance
of university assessment processes
- Advising on and assisting with accreditation activities
- Keeping abreast of current assessment best practice, and
for disseminating that knowledge across the university
- Monitoring and advancing a culture of assessment and improvement
of student learning at GCU
- Providing direction in the creation of university-wide assessment
plans and tools.
- Providing direction in gathering, storing, analyzing, and
interpreting assessment data
- Managing institutional research staff and functions
- In collaboration with the UAC, leading periodic workshops,
seminars, and other activities for faculty and staff on assessment
